Acne Scar Removal

Acne Scars develop when acne becomes infected and the skin repairs itself just enough to remain healthy however leaves discoloured and / or pock marks on the affected area, removing them is often both difficult and costly to remove.

There are many over the counter ‘cures’ for acne scars ranging from oils and creams to micro-needling. Creams or skin masks are the most commonly used for treating acne scarring which can (but not always) work but take a while for the results to start to show as a huge percentage of creams aren’t absorbed by the skin. Therefore creams are often wasted and so are not economical.

Another treatment that can be used for acne scar removal is the derma-roller. This is a tool for microneedling; you gently roll the dermaroller over the scarred area of skin to open the pores of your skin making it believe that it is injured triggering the production of collagen and elastin which resulting in the damaged skin healing itself.

Using the derma roller causes the pores on the epidermis (top layer of skin) remain enlarged for up to an hour so this is the best time to use creams as they are much better absorbed when the pores are open as opposed to when the pores are closed. This reduces the waste in creams and increases the effectiveness of the derma roller.

There are more extreme methods to get rid of acne scars however these are all expensive and have to be carried out by professionals and then they’re not even guaranteed to work! These include; Micro dermabrasion, laser treatments, chemical peals and also skin needling can be done by a professional more vigorously using a longer needle size and numbing cream.

In my experience in treating acne scars I have found that the most result effective and cost effective treatment is derma rolling at home as it is relatively cheap and as it works by inducing the healing process is the most natural way to heal acne scars.
