Acne Scar Treatment
Acne is a common skin problem that affects nearly everyone at one time or another. Most mild acne can be treated with over the counter medications and acne scar treatments that are designed to help alleviate the condition. Moderate to severe acne can produce scars however and once the acne is gone it leaves a red skin blemish. This usually heals and is not seen. Sometimes, however, acne marks may be deep and may not heal properly, leaving scar tissue in their place.
There are several different acne scar treatments. These are procedures that are done in the doctor's office. A dermatologist can determine what procedure is best for you based on your skin type, the amount of scarring you have, how active your acne currently is and how much money you can spend. Some treatments can be very costly and because they may be classified as cosmetic may not be covered by insurance.
A consultation with a dermatologist should be your first step. He can look at your specific scars and recommend the type of treatment that he feels will work best for you. Some discoloration from acne may lighten naturally as time goes by while other, more serious scars will warrant treatment. Remember that scar treatments are designed to make scars less noticeable and won't bring your skin back to pre-acne condition. Chemical Peels There are several different kinds of chemical solutions used on acne scars. Light chemical peels don't penetrate the upper skin layers and can help correct surface scarring as well as hyper pigmentation. Peeling agents include glycolic acids, salicylic acid and trichloroaecetic acid. Salicylic acid is often used because it has anti-inflammatory properties. While some peels can be done at home it is recommended that those with acne get the procedure performed by a dermatologist. You do not want to make your acne scars worse. Dermabrasion Dermabrasion is a process that removes the upper and middle skin layers to improve acne scars. This treatment is best for light to medium toned skin and superficial scars. The procedure is painful and requires local anesthetic. This procedure does not work well for large or deep scars, as they can be made worse. Laser Laser uses light energy to be directed at specific areas of skin to remove acne. The treatment removes harmful bacteria in the skin while not effecting surrounding skin. There are various types of laser treatments available, each with specific possible results. Most laser treatments are done twice a week for a month or two. Some stronger laser treatments may produce results after just one treatment. Skin Surgery Larger and deeper scars may require skin surgery. Scars are opened up and skin can be grafted into the scar area. This is only done on deep scars where other scar treatment won't work. Skin grafts can be taken from other parts of the body to use on the affected areas. Collagen Injection Collagen, a natural product in the body, can be injected to help fill out the skin. It acts to slightly puff out the skin, making indentations less noticeable. These acne treatments are not permanent but last for several months.
